PaypalX – The intersection of Money and Ideas

by Maya on November 3, 2009

Got into SFO yesterday to attend the PaypalX conference as a tech blogger. It has been great so far – waiting for the Keynote right now.

I will post updates here through the day.On twitter and with a Whrrl story. The hash tag is #ppxi09

Paypalx is now open – Paypal opens its API http://x.comĀ  – The developer network is now open!

John Donahoe
President and CEO
eBay Inc.

John became President and CEO of eBay Inc. on March 31, 2008. In this role, John has global responsibility for growing each of the company’s business units, which include eBay Marketplaces, PayPal and Skype.

Highlights from his talk -

  • If they were going to be successful (Ebay, Skype, Paypal) , he knew they had to put technology at the forefront. He put technology at the top by putting technologists such as Mark Carges in key roles and made opening up the API one of the top goals
  • The idea is to disrupt their technology before the others disrupt it. They do not want to be the bottelneck of innovation anymore.
  • Ecommerce is still in its infancy. Only 5% of all payments are done online. It has grown a lot since the past 10 years, but has a long way to go
  • We believe that consumer behavior will change more in the next 3 years than it did in the past 10 years.
  • Paypal will be bigger than Ebay – since Paypal is THE ecommerce platform.
  • Paypal will double over the next 3 years – with help from the developer community.

Osama Bedir

VP, Paypal

  • Paypal will do $70 Billion this year. New APIs , new pricing, new programming this year
  • APIs avaliable currency conversion, pre-approvals, pay anyone, send money, chained payments, parallel payments (in 190 countries) – bringing wallet in the cloud
  • Number of new pricing changes starting next year.
  • Paypal is working with banks, you can send money to family across the globe (P2P) online with just a person’s email #ppxi09

We watched lots of great demos too – most impressed with the concept of the “wallet in a cloud” – a seamless payment experience from anywhere.Payvment also is giving away their code to incorporate payments in facebook apps for FREE. Excited about how all this will pan out!

It is high time all the payment changes make it. I am excited about the innovation that will come about as a result of the open API.

It has been a great morning at #ppxi09 !
